So from my understanding Carbon chips is something good to use for Getting rid or a smell tank or generally clearing up the water if you didnt soak your Drift wood enough. I am moving into a new tank. And i have made my own DIY Canister Filter and i would like to test it. But I was wondering. Carbon Chips are essentially Charcoal, Why not just use Charcoal instead? Is that possible? Because I have BBQs all the time, i was wondering if I could use those charcoals instead of buying expensive carbon chips!

I cant say for sure, but i think aquarium charcoal is treated differently to bbq charcoal?

Also, charcoal is a good way to help absorb leftover meds after treating a tank...

If you want polished water i would suggest purigen instead ;)

Carbon and carbon resins soak up pollutants/organic particulates into pours, thus removing medications, tannins, heavy metals etc.... Although not necessary all the time, it does serve its purpose, with odor and removing meds or contaminants from the water column. But some of these things can be achieved with bio media containing bb. Atleast odor and toxicity.

A lot of us do without carbon

I don't think regular charcol is going to work.... Maybe just do a straight bio diy filtration setup, just fill it will matrix, or ceramic etc.
