ok..i have been working on my 125 beginner ray tank for the last few days.
i have a lot of old filtering hardware from when i was in the hobby before... so i also have a lot of missing parts.
when it comes to filtration i try and get as much as possible...and i will do whatever i have to..to get it.
i am basically a fricking nut when it comes to it...because i always feel like i could do better somehow.
and this is what i have come up with...so far.

two 1 and a half inch bulkheads running 1 and a half inch tubing into two 4" filter socks in a 5 chamber sump.
first chamber is the socks.
second chamber are two air stones.
third is the middle filled with 15 pounds of crushed coral.20 pounds of live rock.
forth is bio balls and charcoal.
fifths is bio balls and 3 water pumps pushing 1300gph.

should be good enough right?
nope....because i have all this room for hang on back filters..

so i put two penguin 330's . One tetra-tec and one eheim(w/ one bio wheel) on the back.
all my propellers are either lost or worn down from use except the eheim which is just missing the top:banhim:
anyway...i have the three returns from the sump returning into each HOB filter except for the eheim...pushing all bio wheels for nothing but mech filtration.
i also have a magnum 350 that also returns into the tetra-tec due to needing alot of GPH to get that suction going.

so yeah..it has taken me two days with only 4 hours of sleep to come up with the best system i can for this little ray tank.

Who else is like this? always wondering what you could do to better your system?

now that i think about it..i guess i could add a UV.......

I wouldn't run the charcoal I never do unless its really necessary other then that a uv couldn't hurt but I wouldn't put that on mow anyways I have found that uv from the.start can slow down your cycle it will kill any good bacteria that's trying to thrive to fast gibe.it time then add a submerged uv.in the.filter or in the.corner of your tank.

why no activated charcoal?
i love it. it helps a lot with oder and with around 75 mini goldfish and roseys its starting to smell.
i like the idea of a uv but i have a RO system that i want to hook up to the system. i think that would be good enough.
i pretty much want to stay with what i have already because i know i am just going to have to upgrade everything in a year.

Code:
How bigs the sump? And how many rays? Y crushed coral? Do u have low ph? And live rock???? Never heard of freshwater live rock. Never heard anyone using half the stuff u listed I'n a sump for big fish sumps.

20g sump
2 rays.
i heard long ago that CC was good in a freshwater system for a steady ph of 7.0 -7.6
no..my ph is fine. its just that with all the waste a ray produces its good to have. i have always wanted to try it. i heard it works great.
its not freshwater live rock. its saltwater coral. i think its (coral and liverock) one in the same..i could be wrong.

Live rock and coral are 2 different things. And let us no how the crushed coral works out.

lmao sounded a bit confusing...interested in how the crushed coral wrks. your using over the back filters ass your sump ??? I use a UV with mine just make sure you are able to get the bulbs ordered were u purchase it sometimes it can be a bit tricky.

i don't use activated carbon either.
in planted tanks it removes nutrients the plants need, and unless dosing meds in a non planted tank, there's no massive use for it. the sump should be handling your bioload well enough that you shouldn't be getting any nasty odor. chemical filtration really isn't needed 99% of the time.

my sump literally consists of 1 layer of mech filtration and 3 layers of bio. then back into the tank.
