I just took this video of my menacing umbee. He/she is at 6-6.5inches now. The experts seem to feel its female but I still have a feeling its male. Has not laid any eggs as of yet. The sex is still pending I guess.

For comparison purposes the 2nd video link was a video taken back in mid January which shows this fella dominating all the other umbees in the tank at that time thus earning the name Menace.

female NO doubt !!! she is a chunky one @ that, I hope that is after a good feeding.... I would cut back and feed her more in moderation for her own health. I never judge a fish by how mean they are or how fast they grow as in my personal experience the largest and most aggressive have turned out female

So its common for a female to be alpha of a group? I have 9, the most dominant one is the largest and meanst but lacks the colors that a few others have and there is one that seems to have the most freckles and copper and it seems to be 2nd in the pecking order and is just alittle smaller. Of the 9 there are about 5 at 2.5 inch and 4 at 3 inch. Im assuming the larger are males and smaller are females, but from what your saying my alpha could be a female?

Thats what I'm getting. I guess the old story about males always out growing females is a bit of a wives tale. All I know is my days of growing tiny 2 inch umbees in hopes of getting that show stopper male are over.

Once this female sells I'm just going to buy a male at a larger size that can be 100% male confirmed.

That video was after a feeding of 5 hikari jumbo sticks.

Lol yes it can happen with umbees. but usually the males will out grow the females. I've grown out my fair share of umbees and I've had a larger male to female ratio. Sounds to me like your learning about them now. Dont beat yourself up over these guys. It takes experience to be able to sex by just eye balling.and once your done growing this group out, you will have a lot better idea what to look for.

Lol i know this umbees are driving me nuts i want to thin some out but dont want to get rid of the wrong ones. Im limited for space till oct. So i have 9 in a 5 ft by 18 inch. I leave them in there longer and just sit back and see what happens. I do have another 50 at my buddies at 1 inch growing so i guess i bound to get a pair lol

Looks like my female when the male isn't around. When the male is in the tank she's usually yellow with black eyes and dorsal/pelvic fins.
