The Pinstripe Damba have spawned. Remarkably, the pink eggs were laid on a cluster of pebbles that the female had pushed into a pile. They ignored the pots entirely. I plan to pull the eggs tomorrow. Might be a mistake to wait that long. I know their reputation. There may be no eggs in the morning.

very nice !! where can i order this type of fish ?

Thanks. I originally obtained mine from Spencer Jack's aFISHionados in Winnipeg. They were imported from Old World Exotic Fish, a wholesaler in Florida. I see they're not presently offering them. I heard that they "skipped" a breeding season down there and hence, no new supply. They are very uncommon and are virtually extinct in Madagascar. A small population has been recently found (Lake Saradrano), after it was thought they were extinct. I've been fortunate to spawn and raise them.

Can you describe more about what they are like to keep? (hobbyist perspective)

I read that a small indigenous population has been found. but didn't find when.

They can be hard on one another if they're in a small tank (<90G) and do best if kept in groups of at least 6. Lots of cover and sight line breaks help. They don't seem to be too aggressive towards other non Paretroplines (Ptychochromis, Paratilapia) and do have trouble competing with them for food. Mixing Paretroplus species works pretty well (kieneri, maculatus, dambabe ....) but again, large tanks (180G+) and multiples of each species. The 'kieneri' seem to "fly under the radar" since they are quite a bit smaller at maximum size. I don't do anything special with their water. Just maintain good water quality and keep up with water changes. Temperature, low 80s. A very enjoyable and challenging genus to maintain and spawn. I have some young Lamena (Paretroplus nourissati) coming up. I call them the "ALL HELL BREAK LOOSE" cichlid because that's what happens when they mature. Unless you take special precautions:1zhelp:, you'll end up with one happy but lonely fish. I'm willing to give them a try. They are gorgeous!! Here's a pic (not mine)

That's awesome good luck and congratulations.
Thank you.

Congrats on the spawn. I have been wanting to keep this species for the past few years but have had a hard time freeing up tank space for such a large specie. Let us know how the eggs do as i Know these guys love to eat them.
