First off I would like to thank Gr8KarmaSF for starting a thread with such a fantastic, thought provoking question.

Here's a link to the original thread: http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=72626

I mentioned in the thread that I would like to start a Investments/Finance thread where we could share our ideas, thoughts, questions, and experiences within the challenging field of Finance & Investment Management.

I'll start off with some of my basic strategies that I'm using in my accounts:

1. I trade a lot of foreign extrange trade funds. (China, India, and emerging markets mostly)

2. I exercise company issues options and buy roughly 4 shares of EV a month.

3. As far as individual equities go, I tend to trade in a "Value" objectively based portfolio. I do take a lot of risk and therefore have experienced a lot of reward. I've been burnt too, but it always works itself out in the long run.

4. I'm in the process of seting up a 130/30 "global" alpha portfolio...I just don't have the extra cash to make "real" money yet. I've been paper trading S&P mini contracts for a little while, and I'm just about ready to get my feet wet...it should be a wild ride.

So, what are people doing with their investments out there?

Who is managing their own money?

I can get into more detail

Hey
Good timing. I have a very long history of working with, and growing, as well as propagating thousands of species of rare and unusual plants, mostly tropical vines, trees, shrubs, and succulent plants, as well as doing herbal work, healing.
I am in the process, right now, of trying to find a location in a city (A very down-to-earth, college based, free-spirited city in Mass.) to open my store which will sell specialized plants - Bonsai, healing plants, plants with spiritual uses, and the ilk. There will also be a few elements that have never been used before. My business plan shows an enormous amount of potential. I am looking into sources of a start-up loan to cover cost of equipment, rent, insurance and the like. (The plants are mostly already provided for, by myself.)
Any ideas?

I doubled my money in a year and a half investing in a company called Sratasys(SSYS). They are a micro cap that makes 3D Rapid Prototype Injection Mold Printers. Just watching the chart daily has paid off.

santoury, I would check out http://www.sba.gov/smallbusinessplanner/index.html. They have a lot of good information, estimators, and advice for the entire startup/management/close-out processes of the business life cycle. You could try to get a loan from a bank, but depending on your credit, you may get a bad rate and end up paying back more than you can afford.

You could also try to find a sort of venture capitalist that is looking to invest in small start-ups. The first thing I would do is write up a business plan because no matter who you go to for financing, they are going to want to see what you are planning to do.

One of the biggest pros/cons to consider is that with a bank you own the business and the bank is the lein holder...you get 100% of your revenue, but if it tanks you still have to front the bill. With a venture capitalist you usually set up some sort of repayment schedule where you are part owner of the business and you split revenue with your partner.

...just some food for thought. Good luck and remember to keep us updated on your business venture.
