well for those of you who don't know i had a tremendously bad infestation of reptile mites. i treated all the animals with a reptile miticide, which basically is thyme oil, rosemary oil and clove oil. i left the tanks bare and took all the water dishes out for one week. i did give the animals water but in small containers they could only drink out of and not get into. i first took one of my city trash cans (cleaned out of course) and put all the decorative wood in the can. i let them soak for 2 hours completely submerged then took them out and rinsed them off. in the pics of the 5 gallon buckets you'll notice it is full of bedding. what i did was fill the bucket up with bedding and then fill it up with water all the way to the top. i then put a second bucket into the first one filling it up as well, to make sure all the bedding in the bottom bucket was completely submerged. i left it submerged for 2 hours as well. next i took all the cages out (this pic is only some of them) and rinsed and scrubbed them. the submerging thing is to suffocate all the mites that could be on the bedding. i will never again assume that my substrate comes without mites in it already. for now on every bedding change will get this same treatment. i have included some pics of the cages in the room to show them with bedding in them. my last post of the Reptile Room got some mixed responses on leaving the animals with a bare bottom tank. hope this helps some one out there with there mite problem.

you soaked the aspen bedding??? thats going a little to far lol i would have just thrown it out. did you use bleach on the larger items? i dont think a straight soaking is gonna kill all the mites. plus if its as bad as you say it is there will be mites on the outside of the tanks and stuff. they are probably on the ground...... the walls.

if your whole soaking thing doesnt work i would throw every thing out but the bowls. all the wood and substrate gone!!!! i would then go out to the woods and pick out a few pieces of replacement hides and branches (for free!) and use them. i usually only use a quick rinse in the bath tub with hot water. you will still want to make sure the mites are gone so i would maybe put everything on newspaper for a bit. after that go to non reptile store to get your bedding. i always used cypress and just went to the gas stations, food markts, or garden centers to get my bedding. after working at a pet store with a lot of reptiles and some being wc i would never by bedding from a pet store. its cheaper anyways to get it some where else. oh well, i hope your way killed them all, but if not then just giving you some ideas. i might also use some pest strips to kill any stragglers..... good luck man, keep us posted

one week ago i took every thing out and bleached it, cages, bowls and decorations. i used a bleach to water ratio of 1:8. and the bedding is new, the bedding that i soaked that is. sorry for not posting that in the original post.

thinks for the link. i saw that at the lfs but it wasn't enough to spray all my animals and they had no more. i used " Nature Zone Mite Guard"

you used a machete to cut a dandelion lol That was wayyyy over killl

your mites came from animals you bring into the house.

Next time use some BKII from pro exotics or some provent a mite

you spray the enclosure as well as the newspaper bedding and retreat as needed, its not the adults its the eggs u have to get.
