If all you need is mechanical then the ideal filter for price would be a magnum 350 in my opinion. Just run the micron cartridge and your water will shine. I got one on my tank just for mechanical and it works great.

Pure dollars and cents, a cheap-o HOB full of wal mart quilt batting.

If you don`t count the cost of overflow, sump, and pump..Filter socks are hard to beat.

Agree, the HOT250, running the micron cartridge gets your water crispy.
