The SS United States held the speed record for crossing the North Atlantic.Bigger than the Titanic and speedier than the Queen Mary,the ship celebrates the 60th anniversary of its maiden voyage from New York City to England this year.It carried famous passengers including Marlon Brando and Salvador Dali in it's heyday.

The SS US was a complete failure and made never a profit. She basicly was a war ship that transported passengers. And she was very unstable on sea.

I know, its a shame what they do with her. She was a technical mistake in many aspects and not a big sucess, but she still is part of an era and should pe preserved.

And just how was she a failure Darius?She is still standing and there is a movement afoot to renovate and turn her into a museum.

Her cost were to high. She was overpowerd for her size and her fuel consumption was enormous. So she never made a profit and depended heavily on government subsidies. Another problem was her heavy rolling in rough seas. The SS US contributed alot to bancrupsy of the United States Line.

Actually she might be headed for the scrap yard if enough cash is not raised for the renovations,which have to be completed before she can become a museum....Dick Vermiel is one vocal figure who is trying to help raise money to save her.
