first ''ancient'' is not correct it simply means old to be correct the term
''primitive'' applies as it refers to as set of charateristics.Among the
''primitive species" are Gars, lungfish,Arrowanas, knifefish and the morymids

All that said there is evidence of evolution within the Family according
to the scientific community the most ''primitive'' or less derived of the
Polypterid group is P.ansorgii and E. calabaricus ('Ropefish') as the most
derived of the extant goup.Glad ya read this huh and no you can't have back the minute you spent reading this lol-Anne

Interesting, thank you

why would I want my time back? :D

I can't wait til I get my tank cleared up so I can get an ansorgii

That was my guess when i read the thread title!! Well for the most primitive, I guessed senegal for he other end of the spectrum.

Hey Anne,

Yeah E. calabaricus is a "primitive" in the group of Polypterid.....but why are you thinking an ansorgii is a primitive Polypterid ?
Yeah i don´t administer an ansorgii but i can´t imagne that an ansorgii is a primitive fish.
I tink his attitudes are the same like a endlicheri, congicus an lapradei has it.
I know each of them has different attitudes/characters,but he also has an inferior mouth...and that has much to say !
So he can´t be completly different...

The only one who really is a primitive one in that group is Polypterus teugelsi.
They both are akin to each other and are both fish, who live in categories.
And not to keep in mind, that both have got an elongated body.
It´s just queerish that Polypterus retropinnis has got a complete different character, although he also has an elongated body ?!

greets,
Jan

anne, do you have a citation to add for the bichir comments? just good to put in there for reference...not sure if i have ever looked that up.

that being said, in the scientific literature "primitive" is actually the term that is often avoided, and "ancient" is still often used. there is a lot of debate to the use of both terms, and in terms of characters, plesiomorphic is used for ancestral or older characters, where as apomorphic is used to describe more derived (advanced) characters. given those are characteristics compared with fishes, but if you look at the lit...most references to polys, lungfishes and gars list them as ancient...with many saying primitive (almost interchangeably).

gotta love scientific jargon--
