A power outage even short can cause it to drain of water and not purge like other brands. I have this happen occasionally. I just refill filter housing and make impeller start again with my finger.

Sounds like gunk & debris might be clogging the impeller. If the flow suddenly stops, but the motor continues to buzz, that's likely the problem.
My daughter's AC periodically locked up in a similar manner as yours. Upon examination, the culprit was excess bio gunk & possibly tiny particles of activated carbon. The answer was upping the tank & filter maintenence. Sand substrate particles can also wreck havoc on an impeller.

Probably sand in the impeller or something.
I agree, even one grain of play sand can stop a small impeller.
If your fish stir up sand/ substrate or , if the intake tube end is near the bottom, you may want to bring away from the substrate.

Or adding a sponge to the ends to prevent that kind f debris from getting in

very reliable versatile filters, not sure what your issue is but I do not think its the filters themselves.
