Quick intro is in order I suspect.

I'm Todd, and I am so new the the hobby of aquariums. My wife made the mistake of buying my a 29 Gallon starter aquarium over the holidays, and it is now a low tech, but dosed planted Neon Tetra and Otocinclus tank.

We have started watching lots of YouTube videos, and we have gravitated towards some of the folks with large chiclids, discuss or monster fish. Now we are considering buying a larger tank (75 Gallon), to see if we are willing to put in the work for monster fish, and I plan on lurking until I see something that catches my eye.

Thanks for reading,

Todd

Welcome to the forum! Always good to see new MFKers around. If you wanna get into this hobby and do it right, you've found the right place!

I'll be honest with you up front- if you're wanting to get into the bigger cichlids, a 75 isn't enough. If you wanna go for like a jaguar cichlid or an Oscar or the like, consider a stepping into a 150 (5x2x2) or a 180 (6x2x2) for your next step. These tanks can house most large-ish cichlids for life. With a 75, you're still likely to need to upgrade again anyway, and the cost difference between the 75 and a 150 is surprisingly small if you do your diligence.

Either way, good to have you! Hope to see lots of pics and your grow outs in the near future :)

Welcome comrade, it’s always nice to see people getting into the hobby. Welcome to monsterfishkeepers.com where the big dogs hang out. As you will find we have a wide variety of fish being kept, fish keepers, and tank sizes so whatever you’re into there’s a place for you here and I’m sure you’ll enjoy your stay here. We’re a friendly bunch so I’m sure you’ll make a friend or two along the way.
I do have to agree with chicxulub that if you’re wanting a larger cichlid then I’d go with a bigger tank such as a 150 gallon or a 180 gallon. Yes I know a tank being five feet long by two feet wide and six feet long by two feet wide seems enormous and quite frankly a bit ridiculous but if you have the monsterfishkeepers spirit then it will soon seem small. Bigger cichlids require bigger amounts of space however they have bigger personalities than smaller fish so that can help with having to pay a higher cost for the tank. Oscars are known as wet puppies because they will interact with you and each have their own personalities!

That’s all for now however I hope you have a fantastic stay here at monsterfishkeepers :)

Welcome!! What do u mean by something that catches your eye?? Like fish for the 75? If so do u want a predatory fish? A peaceful fish?

I think I'm lucky in that I have a good used equipment LFS near me and hope to buy stuff on the cheapish. The thought behind the 75 was not that it was the end stage, but rather to see if we want to maintain a larger aquarium, and it had dimensions that fit a space we had in mind.

What we think we want is in the 300 - 360 range, so it could be used as a room divider. I own a split level, and we have a 10' opening between my living room and kitchen, with my living room 3' below my kitchen. There is a banister there now, but as a WoodWorker, I want to build a stand in the living room, so the tank sits about 6" above the kitchen floor and 3.5' from the living room floor. Then have a tank 7'(ish)x2'x3' replace the banister. The room on the sides will be finished cabinets facing both rooms and pendant lights from the ceiling. This maintains the open view.

Building it will not be an issue, I love building stuff (My beardie has a 6'x2'x2' wifi controlled smart enclosure). As my wife says it is maintaining what I've built that I struggle with. So this one is a biggie and we are taking it a little slow.

I am lurking and looking at fish and what people need to keep them. I like smaller schooling fish, my wife wants big active fish (Guess who will win). The tank will ultimately be a room divider, so fish that won't mind being open and exposed. Given the tank will be a focal point of 2 rooms, we also want fish that will "recognize" us.
