The new way I do water changes is I take a 50ft garden hose and stick one end in the tank and with the other end I use the hose attachment on a vaccum to get the siphon started and then once iam done taking water out i hook up the hose to a faucet and get the water at the correct temp, add prime to the tank and fill the tank up with clean water.

Has changed my water change time from an hour to ten minutes. And it costed me only 5 bucks in equipment.

SO WHO ELSE DOES IT THIS WAY?

I know its almost too awesome for words.

i use the python 50'er for tank waste and the white hose with blue stripes for faucet to tank change. the white hose with blue stripes is food grade.(water) You just have to check your water chemisty from tap to make sure it is ok...

the faucet i use is in the laundry room but its the same water the comes out the kitchen sinks faucet.

I do it kinda like this, but I have everything hard plumbed. The tank is plumbed to a floor drain, and is refiled from a line feed by both hot and cold water for correct temperature.

Before it was a PITA I would have to hook up a garden hose and start the siphon, the make sure it was going to stay in the tank and that it was at the correct height , then go out side and start the siphon. Then hook the hose up and refill the tank, and if it was cold I had to manually add hot water. I always spilled water, or got it all over me and it took for ever.

Now I have it down to a schedule, takes about 20 - 30 minutes in all to drain and refile for a 50% wc, but there is only about 2 minutes of actual work needed.

i do it this way but i use 2 hoses that are attached together
1 is to drain and 1 is to fill at the same time
the water level never changes in the tank when i do w/c

Curious, I've considered in the past but found that I always used the level of the tank to ensure I did the appropriate level or amount of water change. Without the visual reference how do you determine precent change?

I suppose there are flow regulators that will cut off at a certain point but those are probably expensive and would be difficult to DIY.

Thanks

drain out the window, use a hose connected to my shower to refill

I fill using a garden hose with a quick disconnect to our extra bathroom. I built a U shaped contraption out of PVC and a ball valve that screws to the end of the hose to keep it in tanks while I fill them...

I've used regular garden hoses for many years to fill fish tanks. Has anyone have personal experience where using a garden hose has harmed or killed their fish.... and the brand of the hose that did the harm?
