ok i have a pair of firemouths (m & f). The male for some wierd reason looks like he's "panting" ALL THE TIME. with the exception of the the panting (which is often followed by what looks like an underwater cough) has NO sores, bumps or wierd things on his body. i tried to look in his mouth but there doesnt seem to be anything in there.
now the funny thing is that some of the other fish (who are all very healthy looking) are kinda picking on him a little but the female is very protective of him! she will whoop everyone who comes near him. i don't get what all the behavior is about. is it sickness or what?

I AM SO CONFUSED! CAN ANYBODY HELP ME?

P.S. the tank appears to be in good shape. there are plants and theres lots of room to move around. i have bubbles and a biowheel filter. im stumped.

Do his gills seem inflamed or red? (Look very closely)

It could be gill disease or parasites. There's often no noticeable symptoms besides heavier breathing until it gets pretty bad.

How long has he been in the tank and how long has it been set up? What are your water parameters?
