Hello fellow members: I am six months back into the fish keeping obsession, (I'm 48 and it's been 20 years since I've had any tanks). My wife gave me the okay to get into this as long as she has her own tank...and I keep it up. I currently have 2 tanks. A 115 gallon with africans, (haps and peacocks) a 50 gallon with south american cichlids. I have one more tank to go and thats it. It will be 300 gallons plus. As I remember being in this hobby, no tank is big enough and thats why I saved the biggest for last. I am going to do this one right and what better place than MFK to get the best advice and opinions. BTW...my wife does not know about this big tank yet. She thinks I'm being nice and clean in my home office clearing the "one big wall". We'll just keep that between me and you members for the time being. Cheers.

lol. this hobby is def. like an addiction. good luck with the upgrade. hope all goes well. btw, what kinda stocking you looking to get for the 300?

I have always wanted a silver and black arrowana. I want to get them small, possibly in the 6-7 inch range. In the 50 I have some geophagus surnimensis, (4-5 inch) and a gold severum, (5 inch....holy smokes they grow quick) along with some decent sized clown loaches. All of these I have become quite fond of and they are beautiful. I think they would greatly appreciate a new home of 300 gallons. I would greatly appreciate any in-site on the arrowanas mixing with this crew.

Welcome! As far as arowanas, there is a ton on here to read about them. For starters, having 2 creates pecking order problems. Three or more is much safer. They are awesome fish. You need to bump this thread in 6 months and see if you stuck to your 3 tank limit. Think you will be able to?:D

That's a good point. What would you suggest as a third? You are probably right regarding the 3 tank limit, (lol!) I do suppose I could build a separate fish room in my backyard....hum, there's a thought. But, I'm married and I want to stay married....

Hahahaha, I wish you good luck with your wife..... I only have two tanks... one more and my wife would kick by butt out of home....:nilly:

Welcome on board.....

Cheers.

thanks! It's great to be back in the hobby. You, your moderators and other members are very nice and not hesitant to come forward with help and suggestions and I appreciate that! Here's a question for you: Can you point me in the right direction as to an article or someone who knows about the "juicing" of african cichlids, (the addition of a male hormone) to make all the young fish appear male. I replied to another member who appears to have the same exact problem as I have encountered with the Dimidiochromis Compressiceps. I have a LFS in my area that I suspect is doing this which in my opinion is not cool. Good for their sales...but not cool.

lol I am sure she wont care as long as you don't start cleaning her stuff out of the closet right ? Congrats and welcome back. Its new days now compared to 20 years ago
