i really like the New Life Spectrum for cichlids. Also anything with high vegetable content. Mine love cucumbers and oranges! Frozen i feed mysis, and brine shrimp, bloodworms and occasionally beefheart to the smalle guys.

you really need to know what the diet of your cichlids should be first before choosing the food you want to use. bloodworms and such can cause bloat on many malawi cichlids, so be careful. there are malawi's that are omnivores and there are some that are herbivores... just do research on your species and check their diet before choosing.

i for one feed different foods for different malawis that i have. i feed spurilina flakes to most of them (high in veggitable content). i also feen brine shrimp and other things to some. i also feed new life spectrum pellets as well (which i think really brings out the color in them).

THANK YOU FOR SOME OF THIS INFO

for the cucumbers what do you do chop it up in really small peices or how do you go about that ?

Food can really all depend on the fish that you have.

All malawi cichlids I found love New life spectrum cichlid formula, and I have found that to be the best food out there for them, brings out great color in them and I never never seen them eat food with such verosity as this. With all my fish this was their main diet.

For peococks I would supplement a couple times a month with krill and mysis shrimp.

For haps they would get krill, shrimp, and cut up pieces of smelt.

For Mbunas, they would get a flake with a high spirulina content. I would also give them romane lettuce, cucumber, and peas with out the skins. For the cucumber, I would just cut a chunck, take the skin off, wash it and stick it on a fork so it would sink. For the peas, just lightly boil them, enough to get the skin off.

As already said by others, I would suggest you research the fish you have and ascertain what their natural diet is. Based on this info you can then choose the food you need to feed your fish. Spirulina food is the best for Mbuna and I agree boiled up frozen peas make a great supplement. With these fish you most definitely need to stay away from too much protein. Bloat can kill off fish rather quickly if not correctly diagnosed.
My fish love the algae that I scrap off the inside of my tank lid. I also try and promote algae growth on the rocks in the tank.Have a fuelleborni female that loves eating the growth off the rocks.:naughty: :woot: :clap :headbang2

If we are talking mbuna i give mine kens crumbles marineland bio gold osi flake and pellets spirulena tabs.also assorted veggies boiled in a little garlic.made a mix of assorted veggies and seafood they eat that too
