Well I'm thinking of raising and breeding rays on the side. I'm not interested in making heaps O' money or anything like that. I'm just a hobbyist who wants to kill two birds with one stone. I get to keep rays and enjoy and breed them and sell a couple on the way. I've always wanted a job where I could maintain fish in a setting like this. To care for them and watch them grow. I don't like to work, let's just get that out right now. I work hard when I'm at work, but working for the "man" just wasn't meant to be for me. I like my time off and doing things I want to do. I will never have a career job working for the "man" or nor will I "live to work". If this project turns into me becoming Full-time at it or Part-time here and part-time at an actual job than great either way. Why not make some money doing things you love to do and enjoy? Raise some rays....sell some rays. Win. Win.

Well enough of the rambling on about my life, time to get to business. This will not happen overnight by any means. The plans are when we move in March to get a house with a basement or at least a townhouse with a basement. Unfinished preferably, just concrete floors. Mold and spillage will make the carpet useless after awhile. I plan on having to begin with at least 2-3 stock tub tanks for the breeding rays and smaller tanks for the pups. Probably just normal glass tanks for the pups.

I'm looking for economical and durable. Found these.

They have a 320 gallon and a 610 gallon. For less than $90 bucks I can almost double the amount of space. So I'm thinking the 610 gallon tub. The tub is 8 feet wide by 2 feet tall. Don't exactly need the 2 foot heighth, but it's there. The rays would love the footprint! Heck I might even fill it up and make a mini hot tub for a few weeks, until I got it all started!:naughty:

The problem is, it would take up vast amounts of room. I guess I could make a stand, but it's not glass it would have to be supported everywhere. Just sounds too risky to me. Imagine it spilling! So here's where I need some help. The plan would be to have the tanks on the concrete floors and to build up since it's the only space I will have to make a filter for them. I was thinking of making a wooden stand over the tanks. DIY fish tank stand duty. 2x4's or even full on 4x4's. A leg would have to be made in the middle meaning it would sit in the tank so it would need to be coated, but otherwise it doesn't sound like a bad idea. What you guys think so far?

Now to even make it more crazier! The filtration would be two of those plastic barrel drums.

Basically fill the hell out of them with scrubbies or the like BB media and get a pump and you have yourself a sump pretty much. I would still need to clean the tanks, but from a biological standpoint two 55 gallon drums full of scrubbies would help immensely with how rays produce so much wastes. I'm not even sure how many rays I could have in a footprint of this size, but i'll be ready.

Does any of this make sense? Will it work? Just want some opinions on the rays tanks and filters.

I will be raising feeders for the rays and worms and collecting rain from outside to make this as economical as possible. It'll be motoro rays, that's it. Their very good for beginner ray keepers and at a fair price.

I agree on the basement problem...I use 300-450 gallon stock tanks for bigger catfish and I really like them. Much better than a pond liner or anything like that. Like you said, the footprint is also much better for larger fish as opposed to a traditional fish tank.

I have not bred rays but from my understanding, they flip when mating. This means they need deeper water, especially for larger rays like motoros. May want to ask in the ray section but 24" would be pretty shallow to breed, and that's filling the tub up to the rim which you wouldn't want to do.

you might want to think about how you are going to get that tub in the basement. the filter sounds like it will work good

You beat me to it. I was thinking of the same thing. How am I going to get a 8 foot in diameter tub through a 6-7 foot door frame then down a hallway. The 6 foot one would work though perhaps. I'm thinking of a new plan though for the breeding tank though.

A pond liner didn't even cross my mind. You may have gave me an idea even if you won't like the idea of a pond liner, lol.

After researching a bit more in the ray forum for more info, the 2 foot height might not work and it would be less since it won't be to the rim as you mentioned.

Glad I made this thread to think of these things now. Making progress with researching and pricing.

if you use pond liner i would use 60 mil or more. you dont want any leaks by barbs or biting. also you may want to put insulation under what ever you do so that the cool floor doesnt cool down the water too much
