The Real Norcal
whats the real story?
Yes I have already used "search" and what I have found is that when somebody asks about dorado compatibility everyone jumps on the band wagon with the whole "nope not gonna work dont do it those things are killers etc.,etc.,etc.".

But then, and this happens in many,if not most dorado compatibilty threads, somone posts pictures of their dorados working out fine in their comms with dats and aros and I think I even saw a giant clown loach with like 3-4 dorados in the same tank?after that the thread pretty much ends, happens almost every time.

So whats the real scoop?are the people who have dorados in communities just lucky or what?

I mean people told me I wasnt gonna be able to keep two aros either but, hey. However I realise that risking putting a silver arowana with my lei is on quite a different plain than putting a dorado with my lei,and I wont do it if it is super highly advised against.otherwise I'm going to experiment.

You are experimenting with a torpedo with teeth. I have never kept dorado and although they are highly different from ATF's I think introducing tank mates is probably similar for both species. The main problem being that they are highly unpredictable and can do a huge amount of damage in a short time if they turn on a tank mate. On the other hand they would most likely have a hard time defending against a highly territorial cichlid etc...

Nobody can really say if your particular fish will do well with any particular tank mate. But it is safe to say that the risk factor is very high and you should not put such a powerful predator with anything you would not want to loose. If you do try a tank mate you just need to keep a very close eye for aggression

I hope my rant helps but the answer is still very unclear sorry :(

most of "those responders" have never had said fish. like you said, "they just jump on the bandwagon" and also like you said" notice how the thread usually dies after". the best advice i think, is try it. every tank and every fish are different.

The last dorado I kept killed everything tried in its tank. Including other dorado. I've seen dorado groups in comm tanks. IMO, I wouldn't try anything that might be missed in the same tank as these "River Tigers" (so named by the locals in their distribution)

I think dorado is one of those fish you must try to see if it works with whatever fish you have as they're not popular amongst people because of their size/reputation and not only that not every dorado is the same I wouldn't think. Also bear in mind that brycon look very similar so when someone says they have a dorado that works it could be a dorado or a brycon..
