I want to set up a salt water tank as a test i want nothing in it but the fish i want to start with somthing stupid like a bait fish and if i can do it ill move to a big tank 300+ and get some bigger fish of that sort the main question is for such a tank do i need more then just lights and a filter to keep water clean ? Is it neccesery to get a skimmer? Could it work with just a canister filter and maybe some power heads ? Temp and a kept out ill get a chiller just worried about water chemistry a d whats needed

you could use a canister only system for a small tank (75g and under).
300+ tank I highly suggest live rock with a few powerheards (no canisters - the rock is your bio filtration). canisters on a tank that large would be a mess, total nitrate factory unless you took out and rinsed the media every week, and who wants to do that?
