Hi, i recently inherited a 4" common snapping turtle in a 30 gallon setup. The setup is land based with woodchips and sand with a large water bowl. I was wondering if their are any experienced snapper owners that would recommend a different setup as it is fairly dull. i was thinking something along the lines of a more aquatic setup with maybe feeders that he could snack on at will. Any and all help appreciated.

Land based = bad for a snapper. Basically you want an almost fully aquatic setup but not too deep where they have to swim to breathe. For your 4" snapper figure 8" or water or thereabouts, maybe deeper if you have some wood or whatever for him to rest on, or a rockpile. I tend to have it pretty deep in one end and some structure in the other where the snapper can rest and still breathe. Also you'll want a pretty substantial filter, fluval 405 or comparable, and start planning for a bigger tank.

okay thanks for the advice. what kind of substrate should i use if any and should i plant the tank? also what about keeping the feeders in the tank, i know the previous owner was feeding the turtle earthworms mostly.

This guy wasn't a pet but he is a snapper all the same. Caught him while fishing for bullhead. He was bleeding cuz the hook was in there pretty good. He was able to walk away from the whole ordeal tho.

Hi Mate.

First I pretty much agree with whar CTU2fan has told you before.

Now regarding to your question:

Yes you can plant the tank but I would't crowd the buttom with plants just some few resistant ones since the turtle can dig and then you'll have your plants drifting throughout all the tank.

As a subatrate I use Obsidian gravel, but I think if you can use something of smaller grains it would be better, I mean not like the sand of the beach but near to it. This kind of turtles like to dig in the bottom and cover themselves with the gravel to camuflage.

If you can Include a couple of mangler roots of a proper size your turtle would feel more as in home.

I feed mine with life feeders, I just toss a big quantity of fish and river lobsters of an adequate size into the tank and he eats at will.

Your turtle is a Chelydra Serpentina, this kind of turtle accepts pretty much more different kinds of food. You can feed him with beefheart as well besides life feeders. You should include some vegetables, mainly lettuce leaves every once in a while.

I hope you can post some picts of him...:headbang2

Cheers.

Great thread, Armando. Is your turtle a Mexican Snapping Turtle? (C. serpentina rossignoni)

There aren't many MFK'ers from Mexico, good to see there are some monsters South of the border!

Here's a few photos of Snappy, my Common Snapping Turtle.
