I got a 47"by20" piece of tempered glass free (once i remove it from the frame that is) the only problem is its only 4mm thick, i've read a lot about tempered glass being about 3 times as strong as regular plate glass, which if this is the case it would be suitable for the 20" high tank

also has anyone got experiance with silicone and pondliners. my plan is to make a 60by30by24"box (possibly make it a 36 wide) and then line it with pondliner using butel tape to seal up the loose flaps. and then cut out a "window", and use the silicone like a gasket. and use water preassure to "hold" the piece in place.

also i'd have to wiers either side of the window to the ovreflows would be minimally visable

ok
so how do you know it wont work?
is this just your opinion?

i use tempered glass in my DIY tanks usually just a little thinner than whats recommended for plate and i have yet to find a good source of info on what thickness of tempered can be substituted for plate

4mm is thin

oh theres tempered which is very strong and heat treated which is stronger than plate but how much?

you know what, its free who cares if everyone is afrade to try it, and i think that once braced properly it will work...

But if you tap it, hit it, or if it scratch it too deep i think that it wont be as forgiving, and eventuly you might find out what broken tempered glass looks like. If you go with pond liner(i would, and might), what you need to do is use the silicone as a gasket and allow the water presure to hold the glass inplace, the more thicker silicone bead that you lay the better... the silicone will stick to the glass but not the pond liker very well, since its rubber.

If it was me i would do it, the rule of thumb is that when going with !/2 the recomended thickness when going twmpered, and for 20-24" tall tanks its recomended to go with 10mm thisck or 1/2" thick glass, so TECHNICLY you should be ok with 1/4" tempered and it wont blow out, I wuld go with 3/8 tempered if i was buying a piece and i didnt have much money...

But like i said if someone gave me a what you have i would go with it and use it like you are, and if it did blow out i would just go out and spend the money and but a decent thicknes piese or glass or acrylic...

I created a 600 gallon indoor pond / tank ... here is a pic... tempered 1/2 glass and has been running for over 6 months with no probs... knock on wood... worse comes to work have a powerful shop vac ready along with some serious twisty straws... :-P

well if you look at it, 4mm is only .15" thats increadibly thin, and i wouldn't attempt anything over say 16" high with that, and at 16" it still might break.
