Today I got a little pop up message after doing a Google search. It told me that the buttons that I use all the time every day are now in a menu that I have to click through. What' I'm referring to is the tabs at the top of any Google page: Web, Images, Maps, Youtube, News, etc. Now I'm stuck with this stupid ass drop down menu that I have to click through to get to stuff that I want to use. I've come to depend on those parts of Google at the top to navigate the web. This is akin to Google putting a bunch of hurdles in the path of a distance runner and telling them it'll be easier.

The only way I've been able to find to get the old, intuitive view back is by logging out. I don't get why Google would want to hamper their registered members with something like this but allows non-registered persons to use the simpler interface.

Does anyone know how to fix this? I cant even find anything online acknowledging this problem by searching.

OK nevermind, it's back now. Apparently logging out and logging back in did it.

And it's gone again.

After actually figuring out how to research this (apparently "Google black bar" is the correct technical term) it appears as though this is quite intentional and has been rolling out for about a week and will continue to do so. Google's intention is to make their page more "beautiful" at the expense of utility.

No seriously. That's what they're trying to do-

"The other, bigger problem was beauty--or rather Google's lack thereof. 'The DNA of Google was really in simplicity and usefulness, but there was this third piece of design that has never been as much of a focus,' says Jon Wiley, the lead designer for Google Search"

Am I really the only one who thinks this is a terrible idea, or am I just beginning to undergo my mid life transformation into a grumpy old man? Am I the only one who doesn't appreciate the modern computer trend of trying to turn everything into a tablet? It appears as though a lot of people on the internet are actually happy that this is gone and that they're stuck with that stupid new menu. I can only guess that they're tablet users.

Seriously, what are the thoughts of the community on this?

I never download any of those toolbar thingys. too much garbage.
haha @grumpy old man transformation.

No, this isn't about anything I downloaded. I don't download those things either. This is about the integral menu bar that used to be on all Google pages when you are signed in, and which is still there if you're not signed in. For example, if you search for something, after Google pulls up the results for that search, to see pictures, you'd click on the word "images" in the black bar.

Those options no longer exist for people who are logged into a google account. In my case, this is gmail. So, I'm forced to either log into and out of gmail every time I use it (dozens of times a day) to keep my toolbar, or just give up on the method of navigating the internet that I've been using for years.

If you don't log into a Google account, you've likely not seen this.

I actually had to go looking to find an example of what I'm talking about. Its even gone from most of the Google pages even logged out.

I has a sad.

This is what I used to have and miss, the black bar across the top with the shortcuts-

This is what we have now, a little thing with some squares that you have to click on and scroll through. Adding extra clicks and requiring extra scrolling does not, contrary to Google's story, make life easier.

nope I don't sign in for anything except checking mail & never surf while signed in to accounts.
now you see that was a trap ;-)
the life stage after "midlife grumpy old person" is, "grumpy & paranoid old person".

No seriously. That's what they're trying to do-

you say this like it's unexpected, or unusual, or even google specific...
microsoft has been doing this to windows for years. when 95 went to xp the joke around the techs was they named it that because you now had to xpect extra steps to do the the same work.
yahoo mail recently shifted to an outlooky style interface. you click upper left to compose e-mail and now, instead of moving the cursor down an inch or so to select the addressees you go across the screen to the right, then back to the left for the title area.

as long as it looks pretty.

ha, here's another recent "improvement". in youtube you used to only have to make one click to turn off the pop-up annotations, now it takes two.
