Every firemouth i have ever bought gets killed. love the way they look but they are all talk always get beat to death has anyone ever had any luck keeping these guys alive ive had lil convicts beat them dwn there is not a weaker fish

My firemouth has shared a tank with a breeding pair of cons for several months. His flare totally bluffs out the male con who's def. got the size advantage. When first put together, I was a little nervous because of the cons reputation, especially when breeding, but the FM has hung in there. My cons must be total prags, I guess.

Yup, I agree totally. firemouths, they are pretty weak. lol, as soon as I read the title, then the first post I just had to laugh. they look pretty cool, ya just cant keep em with anything.

What size tank do you have? Convicts are pretty high on the toughness scale.

my firemouth was though... till my male festae killed him...I guess that proves your point.

Firemouths vary greatly in temperament. I had a killer Firemouth that was the meanest badass in all the tank.

All the FM's I have had are very submissive. They are great looking and I bet a species tank would be an awesome looking tank.

the thing about firemouths and other Thorichthys is that for the most part they are all bark and no bite. they flare out their gills to look like a larger, tougher fish than they really are in hopes of scaring off another fish that opposes them. if the other fish doesn't back off then the firemouth in most cases is not equipped to fight back. there are exceptions of course and it also depends on tank size and how the fish are introduced together. :)
