As the tittle states, this is the topic I wish to speak of.

In my opinion, if you need help choosing your next animal, you ither don't need anymore or shouldn't have another.

Who can agree with me? I keep my animals because I love each one and that I like the particular characteristics of each. I own several animals, one of the being my Savannah monitor. I have him because of his great personality, easy care(for me anyways) and calm nature. I love him and wouldn't want any other lizard.

No to all of those "just wanting to fill a tank" save yourself and the animal and just sell the tank, or don't put anything in it.

I'm sure some of you can ither expand on my idea here.

Thanks

I see were you are comming from in a way. But when people are asking what type of animals would be best for the conditions they can provide, it is not a bad place to start. It is better to ask what reptile do you think is best for me then end up with something they have no business with. But I do agree if you are just looking to fill a tank, you may want to wait till you really want something.

I agree with most of this, Ive got 2 tanks now because I just built 2 awesome ones for my skink and boa,the point was to simplify things and give them a good life.Sure its tempting to get 2 more snakes I want and place them in these 2 tanks but its just a circle jerk in the end. Im selling the tanks,If I get the other 2 snakes I want Im going to build the cages to go with the others. Ive gotten pretty tired myself of nameing off each gecko that can fit in a 10 gallon but what are we gonna do.I figure whomever isnt tired of it will help them and if I see nobody is then I will chime in.

It's a discussion forum, people like to discuss stuff.
I frequent motorcycle forums and this is like the "What bike should I buy?" thread. People like to talk about things and even get a different perspective. It doesn't mean the guy who really wants a Gecko is going to buy a turtle because Monster fish keepers told them to.:D
I agree with the "Fill the tank" comment but the sad fact is, many animals that people are so proud to have now will end up on craigslist one day or dead, so filling a tank isn't so far off.

No one is familiar with every animal available. If I want a pet with such-and-such characteristics and have such-and-such tank and other resources to devote to it, it is perfectly reasonable for me to ask other hobbyists to suggest good matches for me.

Thanks for your responces.

When I want something "new"(I already know what I want) I go on lets say Goolge and type in "species of python".... once I have viewed them all I might type in "species of boa". This is how I find what I want. I do, and always do, plenty of research on my pets and I hope everyone else does to.

I know even the best of us encounter problems, I'm having one right now cause I am not used to this situation, but we make it through.

Thanks everyone.

theres only one thing i feel you may want to understand, is that some people arent looking to just fill an empty tank or find something to do with a critter keeper. Some come here to ask ideas for a new pet becuase in this particular sb forum is where the "experts" on exotic and on occasional over looked and intersting pet keepers are. You think most people know about reptiles and amphibians outside of there local petsmart or local petcos 5 tanks? people come here to ask for pet ideas becuase maybe they want to learn more about the options of keeping exotics. for example most people i know when they see my axolotl dont know what the heck it is or never heard of one, and they dont know they actually make a great pet that can live quite a while and are easy to care for ect. so if someone as an empty 20g or so and all they see in the local store is firebelly toad, turtles, or iguanas wouldnt it be ok for them come here and ask the experts on the not so common pets on advie on what to get? wouldnt they be happy maybe to find info on axolotl and get to know what a great and interesting pet they make? I was asking about what to do with a 10g tank, not becuase i just want to fill it with anything, i have my certain needs, and expectations of the pet to put in there and by stating this to the folks in this subforum i was guided in choosing the right pet that met what i was looking for. Better people come here and ask the very knowledgable experienced exotic pet keeper than get a red tail boa and a 20g tank for their 10 year old just becuase they listened to the idiots at the local store on what would make a good exotic pet.

I agree with the OP,it seems that one should have some kind of idea of what he/she wants to try keeping rather than asking what they should get.Animals kept as pets should not be taken lightly.

but some people do discuss what it is they are exactly looking for and which pet best meets this criteria so they dont jump into just any pet that might need requirments such as lighting and heating that they might not be able to give.

Yes I agree with that, heck I'm one of those people. If a particular animal piques my interest I will try to research it and even ask about it on this sub forum,I look for those who have or have had experience in what I am asking about as well as from those who just happen to have some knowledge on the subject.I love discussing different herps and animals here but that sounds different from asking what I should get next.
