I was just looking on another site dealing in large predatory fish and found a tank with a black rhom piranha and small community fish working just great. by small community fish i mean neons, platies etc. i have also noticed my lfs has their huge RTC in with guppies and there is surviving fry.
which brought me to an idea to get the wife to allow an umbee and a huge tank for it.
could a large 12"+ umbee be housed with small community fish successfully??

:ROFL: It won't be community for very long but hey give it a shot and let us know how it turns out :grinno:

My thoughts exactly.

Umbies are carnivorous fish. Their mouths are built for catching fish. So your community wont last long. Thats like putting seals in with some great white sharks.

I'd like to know how your LFS has the RTC with Guppies. From what I hear, keeping Piranha with community fish isn't too difficult provided you keep the P's fed.

If the RTC was pretty large I don't see why it would try to eat a guppy. Too small to be worth it's effort. The tank would have to be huge and you will still have some casualties. But like mentioned above anything is possible. I would think a 10' tank would give you a chance.

they have a 4ft RTC, what seems big enough to amount to half a tree and guppies with fry swimming around. i had to look twice when i seen the guppies in there because i thoughtt i was seeing things.

that was my thinking as to why it may be possible, well fed and too much effort to catch such a tiny morsal. i doubt i will ever try it and as title said, it was theoretical.

I was thinking maybe they threw a few hundred in there to begin with, and the RTC just hasn't gotten around to finishing the rest...

i saw a tank in the omaha zoo that had like 10 oscars 2 rtcs 2 tsns 5arowanans a couple of large midas a couple niger cats, and probably 1000 guppies from fry to 2"
