so here's my theory
ok.. water passes through filters (obviously). also, every molecule of water is being moved from one spot to the other inside of the aquarium itself right? so.. the question is.. to get the effect of peat moss or even carbon or ammonia remover for that matter, couldn't you just bag the stuff up and drop it in your aquarium? i believe that at some point in time, every bit of water is going to hit the peat, carbon, or ammonia remover, in turn, doing what is desired.

does anyone agree?

The answer is yes. I think Detox 2 and Renew do just that. I think...
They do sell carbon with Phosphate and ammonia remover.it’s expensive to maintain and unlike your old carbon you really need to change it ever X Days in order for it to work. I change mine twice a year.
That is if I can find the time.

There is nothing saying you can't do that, but you will still need a filter. The item you put in is either going to have to be near the intake, or in a direct line from the output, but pretty far away as the water has to make it way down (this is for a canister filter). If you use HOB filters you could just put the bag below filter where the water falls.

I dont know if this is the same as what your talking about but I had an issue with nitrates and nitrites and I used a filter bag and filled it with nitrazorb and placed it in my tank right in front of a power head, um, it didnt do anything to benefit the tank.

I'd still put it in the filter. There is always the chance of having dead spots in the tank with little water movement.

my whole point to this is because i thought "what if you don't have any more room in your filter for something." i was thinking about adding peat to my aqaurium, but i don't have the room in my filter. of course i would still need a filter wyldfya. that's a given. :screwy: so does anyone think that if i dropped in a filter bag of peat, that it would still soften my water?

How disrespectful.
Buy a new filter or built your self an automated water changer.
Problem solved.
