Late last night when I got home from work I noticed a carpenter ant clinging to the bottum jaw of my baby GT. Never seen that before. Woke up this morning and its still there! GT is seeming to be doing ok despite the occational thrash to attempt to sepperate from it. Should I remove it or let it go and let it fall of naturally? Affraid of possible infection. Sorry about the bad pic.

Personally it would drive me crazy and I would remove it. The sooner you remove it the sooner it can heal, just be sure to totally remove the entire pincher from the GTs jaw.

I Think I can see the ant in the image provided. Looks like he fell into the tank, GT tried to get him, and The ant locked on for dear life....Maybe the pincers type thing is locked on the GT even though the ant has to be dead.

Wild Stuff......Wild.......

I would think that an ant wouldn't be able to survive that long under water.

It didn't...From what I witnessed, it was submergeed in water for about 9 hours. it was as dead as it could get and still locked on his lower lip.
The picture I posted was the only pic I took. If you look close you can see the ant but I could only get a pic from the opposite side of the fish. I decided to net the fish and remove the ant but as soon as I put the net into the water the GT freaked out and dove into the sand. the ant was somehow released in the spasam. I don't see any injury or broken off ant mandible sticking out of his lip so I think its all good for now. I've gotta say, I've been into keeping fish for 20 years and this is a first.

This has got to be one of the most bizarre things I've heard of since getting into this hobby 10 yrs. ago. Glad to hear he's ok. :D

its not that weird, many ants have lockjaw and it stays that way even after death.Carpenter ants arent a solitry species, and got their name from the number they can do on any wood your house may be made of :naughty:
Like those filthy cucarachas, where theres one theres usually more,I would look into that.;)
