Well i put a thermometer in the tank to make sure my water temp was where i wanted it. And i went upstairs to eat and when i went back down it was on the ground broken..One of my fish must have knocked it off the glass? So i picked out all the glass and those little metal balls. It looked like all the mercury(red stuff?) was still inside the little tube. Should i be concerned? My dad said it was fine but idkk Experts help me out please?

i mean if none of the chemicals leaked out you should be okay, but it's tough to tell. good luck to you, this is why i stick with those little external temperature stickers

the red stuff isn't mercury...

It happened a few times in my tank, where those type of therometers broke and all the stuff came out. From what I know, I don't think anything happened to the fishes.

you can either get a external sticker, an external digital thermometer with a probe or just make a mini heat-guard out of eggcrates, zipties and suction cups to protect the thermometer

Same thing happened to me for one of my tanks. My Oscar attacked the thermometer and he bit the bottom half. All the metal balls fell out but the red stuff in the tube wasn't damaged. I just did a huge water change, removed all the metal balls and glass off the floor. My fish where fine, you should be fine. Get a digital thermometer so you don't have to worry about it breaking in your tank.

everything has been said, but use magnets to make sure you get all of the little balls out.

This happened to me. I picked out all the pieces and did a 50% water change just to be safe. The fish were fine in the end.;)
