Any preference on thermometers? I need to buy one for each of my tanks. I have been using a hand held instant read type. I'm sure it is accurate, but it is kind of a pita.

I always just use the cheap glass ones you can buy at walmart in the fish section for like a dollar something.

I have a digital thermometer in each tank and find them very inaccurate no two read the same when put in one tank. However I have a very accurate old mercury thermometer I set the temp in each tank using it and then knowing the temp each digital reads at say 80 degrees I can tell if everything is stable. I know, it is what it is. I think the old fasion analog thermometers are the best, but my system if you want to call it that works for me. I do double check temps with the mercury thrmometer every so often to make sure everything's ok.

Tom from what I have read the ones your using are very inaccurate.

Yes they are inaccurate, however once you know what they read at a given temp they are stable so as I said you can use them as long as you have an accurate thermoter to check them against. Once I know what they read at 80 I can tell if everything is ok. I have been slowly adding hang on analogs to each tank, and will not use these again.

Digital one. Get one that can read up to 1 d.p

You were talking about the digital ones we were talkiing about the ones you stick on the side of the tank.

Yes, I was talking about the digital (electronic) ones I bought. The stick on type are fine they seem accurate enough to give a good ball park temp they work. I like the analog better but the stick on is good enough IMO.

I find the stick on the tank ones are influenced by the room temp. I crack the window to smoke and my temp goes down 2 degrees according to the stick on thermometer, but I know that 140 gallons didn't cool 2 degrees in 5 minutes. I may go pick up an old fashioned mercury one for in sump (my fish are rambunctious and I don't want mercury poisoning if I hang in tank).
