I just recently picked up my first attempt at piranha and have aquired 7 RBP. The smallest one is around 1/2 inch and the others 3/4 inch. I definitely was not expecting to get them that small and now I am not totally sure as to what I should feed them or how frequently.

I just got them today and they are housed in a 135 gal hagen tank with a fluval FX5 for filtration with lots of plants for cover.
The tank used to have tetras in it (over 80 of them) so the tank in well established.

I gave them a frozen cube of brine shrimp today and they seemed to go after in and consume most of it, but I would like to make sure that their diet is varied so I need some more input as to what else I can feed this tiny guys.

They will be good in there for a very very long time in your 135gallon. The only concern is keep your eyes out and close attention the the FX5 filter. It's to strong can suck the baby piranha and could kill them.

Piranha at that stage seem to eat a lot..feed them 3-4 time a day with small portion.
brine shrimp, worm, pellets, cut up small piece of raw shrimp.
change the diet variety different type and every week. It's good to train them to get different diet when young, so they don't get to picky with get older.

Don't be disappointed at this size..because they are aggressive and very active of they life time. so keep the temperature low 76-78f...to avoid killing and fighting (keep the well fed)

With proper care and well maintain, your piranhas will grow up to 6-7" in a few month. they do grow fast so don't be so disappointed at this time.

Good luck and post some pic.

They will grow before your eyes :naughty: Good pick up .
Keep up on feeding while they are under 3 inches they will achieve that
in two months in a 135 with good feeding , Filteration , and water changes .

I appreciate the responses. That was fast. I just gave them some blood worms about 5 mins ago and now their bellies are nice and plump. Is there such a thing as over feeding piranha. Someone told me once that you have to be careful or they will eat themselves to death, I am not sure if there is truth to that though.

Is it ok to put a small but whole piece of shrimp in there and let them pick at it for a while and remove the excess or are they too small to rip the flesh apart?

Yes it is true!...like i said above feed them 3-4 time with small portion. don't over feed them.

It's best to feed them small portion, but a lot of time...that way you can not over feed them.

Remember the more active their are, the higher temp to more then eat...however the more aggressive their get. keep that in mind.

They will take very small guppies and mollies, live brine shrimp, blood, black, and tubifex worms very nicely. At that age they grow quickly.
