Well, It looks like it has been dyed, I wonder if the chemicals could leach into your water?

They look like a cheap dyed cellulose sponge. I would steer away from using them. It could also say "Not for Aquarium Use". Try wallpaper sponges.

EDIT: Pixy Blood beat me to it... I agree with him

well I think these are wallpaper sponges, it says they are for tile work, wallpaper, staining and painting.....

Do you guys really think they look dyed?after reviewing the other pic I think that maybe it is the poor quality of my camera or the lighting at the time that makes them looked dyed.....I don't know why they would dye a sponge brown of all colors,LOL.

It looks like the same light brown as all the natural sponges I see for sale, here is another pic for you guys.

but oh well if it's cellulose than screw it I just picked them up mainly with the idea of asking if they were usable, not with the intent of actually using them.

I think if you were to throw that into a bucket of water for a couple weeks you'll find that it will deteriorate. Seems to me someone here tried to make a sponge filter out of that type sponge and it fell apart.

yeah I saw that where the cellulose sponges literally disintegrated after extended use in a sump but what I'm getting at is I really think these are cut chunks of natural sponge.

If it is natural sponge then there should be no problem right?

Is there any quicker way to test it?

Soak it in Hydrochloric Acid, just kidding, but on a cheap 10G, run it with that sponge and see if it has any effects, good or bad.

That's not a cellulose sponge (usually looks like a flat, layered grain and tears easily), either man made or cut natural sponge like you said. Does not deteriorate quickly, But is not very porous for your use. Open cell foam is what your wanting if it's for a bio-mass. These will work, but not as efficiently and they will eventually deteriorate.

Ok for washing the tank tho :D.
