I was finishing a 20% water change when I took quite a close look in my 40 gallon. It seemed like my male auratus was the boss of the tank, while one female bullied the other two all day long, the two females looked ripped up. I ended up taking 2 females out and placed them in a 20 long. Leaving the male and the dominant female alone to themselves. I also rearanged quite a bit of the rockwork and added some plants. (Anacharis)
To my surprise the male followed the female everywhere, there was no twitching though, he just swam close by with fins all open. The female ran off several times until she finally turned to the males egg spot, the both sank down until they reached the bottom, the male began to vibrate, and the female pecked at his egg spot. Sadly, it didn't work out, after moving aside to let the female lay her eggs, she just hovered in the same spot, as if she didn't know what to do next. The male then gave her quite a blow. And she swam off....leaving me very dissapointed.
Will the female eventually get it? The male still trys to swim close with fins erect but the female gets scared off. Sigh....until next water change, farewell!
