the standard thickness of a 22" - 24" is 1/2"..... can 18" high get away with 3/8?

you can but there will be bowing... 1/2" would be better. 18" is on the high side for 3/8 where as 18" is on the low side for 1/2". if you want to be safe go with 1/2" but 3/8" could do the job

this information is coming purely from browsing around MFK. im planning a 55g that is 20" high and have been advised that 3/8" would be minimum and 1/2" would be better

As stated, 3/8" would work, but it will bow.
