My oscar passed away recently. Wanted to share some things.
They can see clearly what something is about ~4ft out of the tank. I'd hold his pellets out, he'd see "something". When I'd get it about 4 ft way he'd go berserk.
Then can learn voices and faces. Anyone but me sat in front of the tank/talked to him/was in the room he'd puff up, open that big mouth and "attack"
(no slamming against glass, just surf it with his mouth open). I'd tell my son now back off so he feels like he won
They can learn gestures. Sometimes I'd feed him and in his excitement he'd miss all of them, kicking them to the back of the tank.
I'd start pointing behind him when he was like "where's the food man!", took about 3 weeks for him to get it (tested by not pointing a few times, he finally found them but took quite a bit longer without the pointing).
Another gesture was opening and closing my hand (like a mouth). He'd do the same when I did it to him. It's all for food I know
LIked to be pet everyday for a few, he'd come up to the top for it most times I put my finger in there.
They are called the puppies for a reason. Spend enough time with a fish IMO they'll get to "know" you.
