I am thinking about picking up java moss and a nymphaea sp.-a lilly. My questions are:

1. Java moss-how long does it take for it to take hold on drift wood and rocks?
2. The lilly is sold as a tuber. I want this in my 25g tall tank so I can have room for it to bloom and so it can have some surface room. the tank is about 18-19'' deep. I was thinking about starting the tuber in a 10g and transplanting it in the 25g. Should I do this or will the tuber be fine in the 25g from the start. I have a sand substrait. Should I use flourite to get it started?

as far as java moss just use fishing string to hold it to a rock or driftwood. its what i do to my java fern.

i have no experience in lilies.. maybe someone else can help with that question...

Thanks, does it take long?

It can quite a long time to take hold. If you use cotton thread, you can forget about untying it coz the thread will rot over time.

As for lillies, start it off in the 25gal. Which type have you got? In the past, I`ve grown Nymphea rubra and they go like crazy!! To slow down the rapid growth, snip a few of the thicker roots. Also if you want it to bush out under water, snip off the surface leaves. They are a great plant imo. Enjoy!

Thanks for the info. I'm not sure what the exact name of the lilly is, because it wasn't specified. Here is a pic, and maybe that will help. Also do lillies need a lot of light? That is one thing I found when searching on the web.

Sorry it took ages to reply...
The plant in the main pic looks identical to the N rubra I had, but the mature leaves in the bottom right hand pic are different. They have a hammered edge, but mine were smooth edged! So I`m guessing it to be N stellata.
As for lighting, medium light should surfice.

Enjoy :)
