My girlfriend convinced me chickens are a good idea. For water, they currently have a 5 gallon cooler that is connected to nipples for drinking. It works great for now, but I get a feeling that come winter, the water will likely freeze. I was thinking though, an aquarium heater might be warm enough to stop it from freezing. Anyone have any experience with this?

I don't know about the aquarium heater, with temps that cold I personally would be afraid of it going out quickly or while I wasn't home. Plus the lines may still freeze. I know that people use heat tape from Home Depot. Wrapped around the outside of course. Or you can use another water source like a heated dog bowl. Or place the water inside a heated coop.

Aeration could help prevent freezing in the container also. Would solve the freezing lines however

Not too sure if its too big for your purpose but my gf has a heater designed for horses to keep the trough from freezing. Sold at tractor supply co

Just use a bowl on the five days it will get cold enough to freeze your chicken waterer.
