I bought a knifefish the other day that was labelled "Brown Ghost Knifefish", well it definitely isn't that species and it closely fits the pics I've seen of Asian Knifefish. I am wondering if it will be able to live its life out happily in my 55 gallon tank. It's a very cool fish and I'd like to at least keep it til it gets too big for my tank if I won't be able to keep it for its life.

There are Brown Ghost Knives that are out there. Post a pic so it can be IDed:)

Pictures are worth a thousand words< could you upload one or 2?

Knife fish are a hard bunch to ID, cause there are so many types, I have a Papyrocranus afer Knife, and it goes by, Marbled knife, Reticulated knife, arowana knife, and asian featherfin, and I'm sure other 'common names' too. Check out this link to see if this is your fish, if so you have about 6 months before you will start to stunt the growth of your fish in a 55 gallon tank. I sold one already to the owner of a 300 G that was 18" in length (9 months old?)- I have heard 24" is max in captivity too. the picture in the link is of a juvenile without its dorsal (feather) sticking up...

The head is all wrong for a brown knife though... I will post a pic if I can get him to sit still. He is amazingly sensitive, he was out swimming around and I put my elbow down on the table hard accidentally several feet away and he immediately hid! This is such an amazing fish :) The link looks nothing like mine! Neither do the adults on Google Images.

In the meantime while we wait for an actual pic of Nukes, this is exactly what he looks like, right down to the color:

He says no pictures please!:

God I had no idea my tank walls were so dirty... Ewww! Sorry about the bad pics, I hope they help anyway.

EDIT: Well I dunno if this was such a great idea but I took my betta Sam out of his 1.5 gal cube temporarily and put Nukes in for better pics... Neither of them were terribly pleased...

Yup...looks like you got yourself Notopterus Notopterus. They can be quite aggressive. They are actually probably the most aggressive of the Chitala species. It's also the smallest species of the Chitala species growing around 12" A 55g would be fine for awhile, but it'll probably do better in a bigger tank to calm it's aggression down.

I think I like my new knife better than my neon tetras, but I do hope he leaves my blind caves alone... He was chasing them around a lot last night when they were bumping into him, he's as voracious a bottom feeder as they are top feeders! I really want to upgrade so I'll definitely have to start saving now that I have a legit reason ^^ And then I can use the 55 for its original goldfish purpose lol! Thanks for your help :)

ETA: This is the second time that LPS has really messed up, they told me he was peaceful and would only get 8 inches... Of course I didn't quite believe them, I learned my lesson in the past, but I liked the little guy so much I bought him anyway. How much do these usually sell for? I paid $10.

ETA again: About how long might I have before he needs an upgrade, or can he chillax in my 55 until I can afford a bigger tank?

approx $300-500 in AUST. maybe more!!!
$10 will get you 1 cory dory, not the fancy kind but common bronze! lol

Well...I don't normally see them around for sale, but the last time I saw a normal Asian Knife fish was $13 at 3"

They can grow to about 12" and would probably be fine in a 55g for a good while, but a 75g would be best.
