When you get an aggressive individual snake do you think its always possible that they will calm down? And how would you go about doing it?

Keith

It's usually possible, not always...some snakes simply do not want to be messed with and that is that.
But usually all it takes is constant gentle handling. Start out with just a few minutes at a time and gradually lengthen the time. If it starts getting really stressed just put it back and leave it alone. Snakes are not like dogs and it will not associate the stressed behavior with being released as many people seem to think.
just be patient and persistent and expect to loose some blood depending on the kind of snake

Yes, my watersnakes were hardly tame when I caught them.. Pissy little fellows..

What I generally do when I capture them is hold them in the snake tongs, and carry them far from the water. I then release them in the grass and treadmill them with the snakehook until they tire themselves out. I then just let them cruise around, only using the snakehook to bring them back when they get too far away. Usually by this point they let me just pick them up with my hands. They will be fine with this for however long I keep handling them on a regular basis. If I slack off for a few days they will turn more aggressive again. I plan to post a video showing the entire process sometime.

Honestly though, I think it will depend very much on the individual species.

when we got my king back from his mia adventure last year he was super aggressive. i just held him every day before his lights came on so he was cold, and my hands felt warm. and he eventually learned that being good when i was holding him would mean he stayed in my hands and got warm. if he struck or musked. he got put back in the cold cage. took a few months but we got him back to the normal, fall asleep in your shirt sleeve or pocket, snake he is.

With regular handling, yes there is a probable chance that it will tame down some. But there is also a fair chance that it will not.

Anacondas in general tend to be more on the defensive side, Just handle her gently, allowing her to move freely, and NEVER restrain her head, they hate that. Avoid cornering her in her cage, maybe try sticking your hand in the opposite end of her cage and allowing her to come and check you out on her own terms.
