OK so I have a 6ft tank 600 liters rocks big bit of driftwood loads of hiding places and plenty of space.I have 2 cat fish a feathered and a pictus and of course my male JD 2.5 inches. Now I got another JD yesterday 19th of July 2017. I did ask for a female when I ordered I know it'd difficult to sex when they are juvs but was in hope it was so for the argument sake will say her. She went in I had completed all nesersery procedures before she went in. She swam about and the male JD was obviously curious and would swim by the side of her but up at a diaganol position gently pecking at times she didnt seem to care much. He then chased her now and again and she at times wouldn't even move when he was pecking her like letting him do it now most fish would swim fast away and hide well she did eventually and was up behind the wave maker. She would come back down to the sand now and again so it got late she was up by the wave maker when I went to bed. I wake up I turn on the light and she is no were to be found I checked and cheacked my heart sinking and the impending thoughts of what must have happened. This is my guess he harassed her all night she got overly stressed and past and the cat fish were the clean up crew. Am gutted and to have her only for one day. Now am I right in my guess would you say if what happened to her? was it in fact a smaller male that got sent to me? Why was he swimming in that position next to her? Why didnt she go and hide there were so many places to hide. Any help or prediction as to what may have happened would be appreciated also does this mean the little git can't have any tank mates ever he gets on fine with the cat fish a little nip to them now and again to let them know who's boss am guessing.

Sorry for your loss. It is very difficult to add another JD to your aquarium due to the original JD has established the aquarium as its territory so any other JD you add probably would suffer the same fate. Tbh the best way to get a pair is most breeders get four and grow them out and most times two of them will pair off. Only experience and some luck in pairing two fish at different times.

Thanks for your reply am guessing my prediction as to what happened to her is more then Likely right.

When you say 'ordered' was this fish shipped to your house? I like to quarantine shipped fish for at least a week even if I don't expect them to be sick. It gives them time to get over any shock from the shipping process that would leave them vulnerable to the tank boss. Fish seem to sense weakened fish and target them immediately. When the quarantine is up I feed the tank and put the new fish in while the others are feeding. A 6' tank should allow 2 juvenile jack's plenty of space. But honestly, if that male is already trouble at 2.5 inches I'd just start over, order 4-6 and let them pair off.
