I'm thinking about going canister filter on the 55. Never owned one before and can use some advice. Currently running a penguin 350 and was thinking about adding a sponge to clarify better but figured maybe a canister would be better in the long run. It'll give me some experience for when I get my real tank. Have to fake my own death first but thats for another thread. Anyway, thanks.

Don’t own one, but I was going to get one, but learning that maintenance on it would be a hassle, if they aren’t cleaned in time, they may not help with filtration and instead get a rise in nitrates. If you can clean it atleast once a month depends on your stocking level, then they will be more efficient than a single hob. If you can get a sump, then that will be better for long term.

I own And run Fluval fx4 and fx6
There are pretty simple to set up and clean
They can be pricey so I’d suggest waiting for sales at petsmart and use a coupon if you can
it’s a pricy option but they work and flow pretty good And I’m sure would take care of your issues

Now a cheaper alternative is buy a good air pump
I’ve heard good things about the fluval air pumps as well , and run 1 large or 2 md size sponge filters
They really do work and will help clear up water once there seeded well and thru
When I was keeping multi tanks at times a tank would clouds up so I would take my largest used sponge filter out of my 150 and let its clear up the tanks that needed it
It always worked

For a 55gal I would recommend one or more aquaclear 110s and maybe an ac70 powerhead with quick attachment for extra mechanical filtration. Much easier to maintain and with 500gph has more flow than most canisters. Get PetSmart to price match Chewy to save some money.
