I was at my lfs picking up some cichlids when I noticed some big ol' senegals. Around 12-13 inches each. I've always thought about getting one of these guys. Is the size above full grown? They were around 7.99 I think. Reasonable? Tank size? I have a 40 gallon with a few cichlids, around 3 inches each. Would they get along easily? Foods? How bout market shrimp? Fish fillets? Floating pond pellets? Algae wafers? Sorry for all the Q's, but I want to make sure I don't go wrong if I do purchase one.

for that price and size, that's a steal. mine was purchased for $30 and he was only about 7 inches. he had plenty of girth but not that much length. i feed mine tilapia, shrimp pellets and silversides. they're not picky and are very friendly fish. they would be Ok in your 40g. by the way, one of my lfs has a 8 incher for $20, right now.

Oh really? Then I may just get one. I don't like overstocking my tanks.
Will it be fine with the cichlids?
i have mine with oscars, but it depends on age, size and aggression level of the cichlids. i introduced all of my fish at sizes that i thought would reduce fighting and eating and it worked. at 12 inches, you're probably OK. by the way, petsmart sells the little 34- inchers at $5-$6. you did good.

That's full grown for a regular Senegal. They were around 7.99 I think. Reasonable? Great Price! Tank size? 55 would be good. I have a 40 gallon with a few cichlids, around 3 inches each. Would they get along easily? 3" Cichlids are a snack for a Bichir that size. Foods? How bout market shrimp? Fish fillets? Floating pond pellets? Algae wafers? Varied diet is always good. Even though the Algae Wafer isn't part of their diet, I'm sure they'll go after it. Just don't make it a regular meal for them. Sorry for all the Q's, but I want to make sure I don't go wrong if I do purchase one.

Getting into bichirs is great. They should get along with cichlids, but be careful with oscars and bichirs. Once had an oscar try to eat my senegal, and marble goby tried to eat albino senegal. They'll eat practically anything. Go about 80% prepared (pellets, sinking carnivore pellets, shrimp pellets, krill) and about 20% fresh / frozen foods and they'll love you.

I tend more towards benzjamin13's answers. Cichlids and polys are iffy, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. But with that size differential, most likely you'll end up with an extremely fat senegal and fewer cichlids. You never know for sure until you try, but I'd lean towards that to the tune of about 80% probability or even greater. http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/member.php?u=3303

Yeah, I just went to the nursery tank where I have a couple 2-3" cichlids, then went back to the 90 gallon where my senegal is (at about 9" I'm guessing) and there is no way on earth that I would put her in with those little cichlids. You are right, snack time. I do have bichirs in with them, but the bichirs are like 5 or 6 inches and not much of a threat at this point.

I've been thinking about trying out my Keyhole Cichlid with my 3 Sens, might put it in in a breeder net for a few days just to get them used to the idea. They seem like smart fish.
