A friend whonts me to keep a small mouth and a walleye in my 75. I alredy have 5 blue gill and posibly 2 oscars. But, if I get the small mouth and walleye I dont have room for the oscars. Im lening more on the oscar side.

:nilly: SOW CONFUSED :nilly:

With 5 bluegill you don't have room for the oscars anyways. Don't get the walleye or smallmouth because they get WAY too big for your tank. Just stick with your 5 bluegill or get rid of them and get the two oscars.

they are pumpkin seeds. I just did some reserch and they only get 9in. and I have 5. Sow you have a total 45in. of fish. And you find the serface area (for my 75 864in. squared) and for 1in. of fish 12in. squared. Then I have 312in. squared left. The oscar takes 13in. Now if you can do the math I have 11in. Squared left. I can only have 1 oscar but, 1 is fine. Sow I have proven you rong chad HA!!!!

Snakehead - what a lovely attitude you have.

a school of big sunfish will pretty much take up your whole tank, especially since they are given to tearing the fins (and bodies) of other fish.

Seems there are many formulas that try to give you a guide to how many fish you can have per ????. The problem I see with all of them is they don't ever include the girth of the fish.

I have a hard time seeing in anyway where 12 one inch neons would be the same as one 12 inch oscar. Speaking in terms of bioload and free swimming area.

Although I am not familiar with your pumpkinseeds, IMO five 9" fish would need a much larger tank then a 75gallon.

Oh man this thread is going to turn into..."THIS GUY NEEDS A BIGGER TANK"

So I'll ignore that side of it and say.... Go with the Small Mouth if you do anything. My smallie is AWESOME!!!

Okay I won't ignore it. You gotta get a bigger tank cause you'll love it way more yourself!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :headbang2 :headbang2 :headbang2 :headbang2 :headbang2 :headbang2 :headbang2

.....and your fish will do better.

Putting aside the fact that your tank seems terribly overstocked (especially considering that pumpkinseeds can get very aggressive with each other and other fish), what temperature do you keep this tank at?
Walleye and smallmouth both prefer cool temperatures and high dissolved oxygen, so if you'd have trouble keeping your tank in the 72 degree range (personally I'd go even lower for these 2 species) then I'd go with the oscar.
You mentioned not having enough room to keep both the oscars and smallmouth+walleye. Oscars like tropical temps whereas the smallmouth and walleye like cooler temperatures anyway, so they wouldn't be particularly compatable, not accounting for space restraints.
Smallmouth can also be sensitive to water quality (I'm thinking this is true for walleye also, but cannot remember), unlike your oscars or pumpkinseeds, so this is something to consider when keeping them in a heavily stocked tank.
On the other hand keeping 2 oscars with several pumpkinseeds in a 75g will likely eventually cause serious carnage, so this isn't a very good option either.

Also want to add:
Smallmouth - possibly 2 ft long, commonly 15 inches or more.
Walleye - possibly 3 ft long, commonly 15 inches or more.

Neither are good community aquarium candidates as adults unless kept in very large tanks with fish that will not fit in their mouth.

There is no good stocking formula, you have proven knowone wrong. Think about it. Do 12" of neons equal a 12" oscar? No. Can you keep 12 neons in a 12g tank? Yes. Can you keep a 12" oscar in a 12g tank? No. What it really boils down to is the maintanance you put forth. You can keep a single convict in a 100g tank but if you never clean it the fish will die. With that many pumpkinseeds in a 75g you will be hard pressed to keep up with the water quality in that tank once they are full grown. IMO two oscars is not an option, let alone a smallmouth or walleye who will both outgrow the tank anyway.

OK!!! I get the point. It was only a idea. and the tank is 74 degres and I had previosly cept them at a room temp of 68. I later fond out that they are more active in warm water I slowly ajusted the temp and now I have breeding pairs. And I now that they are very agresive fish. And that there is a need for a bigger tank AND thers only a small patental I will get a oscar.

Well now that they are breeding they will most likely kill any oscar you put in...
