So I'm thinking of taking the plunge into salt water with a bioqube setup, something like this http://www.amazon.com/JBJ-Nano-Cube...ts/dp/B002BC4XIU/ref=pd_sim_sbs_petsupplies_3 or this http://www.amazon.com/Oceanic-82052...?s=pet-supplies&ie=UTF8&qid=1325016040&sr=1-8

I havent been able to find any real good info on these setups. What I was wanting out of the tank is a small reef setup with simple/easy to maintain corals, live rock/sand, and only one or two fish.

The real question is can I successfully set up a small reef tank without upgrading the lighting/filtration or will it be good out of the box?

You'll be fine with low-light corals in there, so you're looking at softies for the most part. I'm pretty sure that there are versions of those two kits that have better lighting that would work for some of the more light-intensive coral; there are also kits out there to retrofit better lighting on those two particular aquariums, so you could go that route as well.

well as my first take into salt water I will probably stick with just the lower light corals for now before I get into more complicated light systems but if there are kits out there to change those aquariums over I may just go ahead and order so I can begin setting it up and cycling.

Thanks for the reply

Here's a link to the one company that offers LED retrofits for the BioCube just to give you an idea of the cost and what the retrofit kits consist of.

thanks for the link, all in all not to bad. I think I will go ahead and get the 29 instead of the 14 because how close the price is from amazon.com

I will look into doing the retrofit after a year or so
