hi. im planning on adding some crabs in my fish tank [ fresh water tank ]. i was wondering are there different types of fresh water crabs, and if there are pls post some pic's and their names also. thx alot !!
By no means am I an expert on crabs but I do know they have been known to hurt fish. Also I remember reading another thread that said, most crabs that are considered to be fresh water are really brackish and you also have to give them a spot where they can get out of the water for a period of time. Again I'm no expert but when you do find a species you like make sure you get a reliable source of info. Make sure your fish are a lot larger, Crabs like to sneak attack the fish while they sleep.
Back in the day we used to see some crab in the LFS called "Bangkok Crabs". There were gold ones (same gold tone as a gold severum) and dark red ones. They were maybe 2-3" across. Very cool crabs, and the ones I had never ate my fish (I did have big fish). They did like to get out of the water though, they were good for climbinb the heater (old HOB heaters) and getting out. Looking back they might well have been more like semi-aquatic. Also they seemed pretty sensitive to heat, I had a heater malfunction and the crab died while all of the fish survived.
I see fiddler crabs & moon crabs for sale also, but I do think they're probably more brackish, and I think the moons like some land to climb out on also.
A few years ago I thought a nice 4" red crab would make a cool tank addition. I hardly saw him but each time I did, he came out missing an extra leg until he was hobbling around with only 1 leg. It was so pathetic that I euthanized him. The outcome was quite the opposite of my intial worries that he would hurt the fish.
thx for the info guys..i went to my LFS and i saw some filder crabs i was excited to get them but i thought of the risk i was taking, so i didnt want to take the risk with my PBJD, and my fronts. So i didnt get them
