Thinking about getting a Gar (help me)

Hello I'm thinking about possibly getting a gar but really don't know a whole lot about em. In addition to some online research I'd like to get some help and opinions. Mainly what are some of the smaller species and low large do they get? I don't even have a tank yet so that's not relevant I'm just getting some info to start.

I'll save you some time: true gars are illegal in California. In other words, the following fish are illegal to have in CA: Florida gar, spotted gar, shortnose gar, longnose gar, alligator gar, tropical gar, Cuban gar, and any hybrids between these various gars.
