I just purchased a 40 breeder and have been tossing around a ton of different ideas in my head as to what to stock it with and a GSP is one of them.

I know that GSP's move from brackish to full marine and my question is how do I make the transition from brackish to full marine without setting up a separate FOWLR tank and transfering the GSP from the brackish to the FOWLR tank? Is this even possible?

Thanks

just add more salt to the tank every so often. untill the salinity is marine. there are afew ppl on here that love puffers and know more about them than me .

good look with them.

i had four but they all died 1 by 1, was my mistake though i think lol

I guess I need to ask at what SG level can I start to keep live rock. The transition between brackish using a HOB filter to marine with live rock and a protein skimmer is where I'm not real sure of myself.

I understand that part of it Pufferpunk, my concern is the switch from brackish to full marine and losing my bacteria in the tank.

I'm going to guess it would probably be best to keep the fish in brackish, setup a separate marine tank, let it cycle, and then move the GSP to it.

I wasn't sure what the best method from switching from brackish to full marine in the same tank is, when to add live rock, and how to keep the tank stable during the transition without killing all of the bacteria and my puffer in the process.

This is exactly what I did (brought me to the other side...). Keep the FW filtration as you raise the SG toward SW. Once you get it over 1.020, you can start adding cured live rock, powerheads & a protein skimmer. Continue with 50% WC. When you have a sufficient amount of LR to support the tank, remove the FW filtration. After that, you can reduce the WC accordingly (you'll have to test nitrate for a while).

Haha, I think it's the fear of saltwater that's making me nervous. Thanks a lot for the advice. I'm going to start shopping around and will be sure to post up my progress.

Thanks again for the help.

Believe me, I worked in LFS for 8 years & would rarely even walk down the SW isle. I was way too intimidated to imagine I could keep anything in SW. Keeping GSPs & having the time to understand how easy SW really is, led me to this:

Ok you are making me a bit more comfortable. Your tank is absolutely gorgeous, although a bit too advanced for me. I think I'll go ahead and setup the 40 with pool filter sand and bring the little guy home. At 4" or so I'll slowly start pushing him/her to 1.02 and then I'll add the live rock.

Thanks a lot. I'm sure once this gets going I'll be sending a whole lot of questions your way. I mean you are the Puffer Queen :)

Believe me that tank didn't appear overnight. ;) I did a ton of research & added corals slowly. Needless to say, there are no puffers in that tank.

You can do this, it's a slow process. Take your time raising the SG.
