right now i dont know what the hell i want anymore!!! i have a dovi cichlid as of now, baby, about 2 inches, but now im thinking of getting a black pirnah or a elongtus.... hopefully i spelled that right, anyways, how do these guys compare, would u consider either one tougher than a dovi???? i meen imo a rhom would chomp a dovi even though the dovi is more aggresive, i just dont see how a dovi would be able to hang with a rhom, .... well anyways thx........ and i know i live in california and they are illegal, but im just talking about this in a fiction sence........ so please reply.......

im not trying to make this a snakehead vs pirnah, or dovi vrs red devil thread, i was just wondering what your guys expiernce have been....... i like the dovi and all but the thought of owning a black pirnah is pretty intrigueing

yea they are beautiful but they grow really slow and is a solitary piranha which needs its own large tank

would rather keep one then a dovi

Unless your planning on getting a rhom of 12"+ I wouldn't do it.

serra species of piranha grow pretty slow, I like to get them at least at 1/2 of full growth potential. Since its very slow. There usually very aggressive toward other fish and animals. But I can say some of my RBP's & caribe have just as bad attitudes toward other things besides there group.

I find myself usually telling people to go with rbp's since thats why people are usually trying to get into piranha is for the "feeding frenzy" and you can also get them very cheap. Then After getting a kinda know how on how they act, sell them off and get caribe (which costs more and are a lot more aggresive)
Rbp's or other pygos grow very fast. If fed right, in the first 6 months mine were hitting around 8 inches from fry. But after that growth slows down. Rbp's are good to start with can be skittish when young, but don't live every day trying to kill each other like my caribe used to do.

You can also mix and match pygo's, I wouldn't suggest it though in anything smaller then 125g, since most like to pick on one when there less then 4-5 piranhas.

youd probably prefer a shoal more (you could do 3-4 pygocentrus (red bellied/tern.,caribe,piraya,) in a 75 gallon which is the tank size a singal black piranha or elongatus piranha would need plus a shoal would be more active

like said it takes rhoms (black piranhas) years to get to a large size so i would recomend buying it at that size

i dont know really anything about doviis so i cant really compare the two

yea go for a schoal if ur gonna get p's or even a blak pirahna. but if u have the choice of keeping dovii or p's keep the dovii.dovii have more personality. p's are only entertainin when they eatin ,other than that they are kind of borin. but its ur decision. dovii are w2y more aggressive. at the age the elongatus' or rhom teeth has not developed well enough. yea so if ur planin on getting a 1-2 inchy pirahna plan on dovii havin fat stomach.
