Hey guys, I have been straying away for fish for a bit till i build my pond this summer, I have my 55 gal aquarium i was thinking of putting some kind of reptile in. I want to know what would fit in there for life and what would be easier to take care of as a novice :D. The only reptiles i had as a kid were green anoles, and also some turtles like the red ear slider and box turtles.

why have a snake when you can have a tank of fish plus snakes are week why not get a snake head !!!!
And unless it was a dwarf species it would probs outgrow the tank. And why are snakes weak? Some of the venomous species can kill a man. Andt forget the massive species like anoconda's they eat crocodiles lol that doesnt seem weak to me :P

HEY!! crocs eat anacondas too!!!!!
find me a anaconda eatting a hippo!!! there is a confirmed case of a croc eatting a hippo!!

ps the one were they get a snake to regergitate a baby hippo does not count

It doesn't count because it's not a baby hippo. It's either a tapir or a capybara. Hippos don't live in South America, which is where the video was filmed (the snake is an anaconda, and the people in the video are speaking Portuguese, meaning the video was filmed in Brazil).

Stay away from turtles and tortoises. A 55 is too small for any of them (they either get too big, or they need more room to move around than a 55 will allow). Also, stay away from heat rocks--they don't call them sizzle stones for nothing. Heat lamps and ceramic emitters work the best (just keep them out of reach of the animals). Keep in mind also that any lizards will also require UV lighting and calcium supplementation, and chameleons are definitely out if you're a novice. Since you said you're a novice, I'd recommend a snake. They need a heat source (from an overhead light), substrate (something to crawl on and/or dig in), a lockable, screen top, a water bowl big enough to soak in, and food (frozen/thawed only for snakes that eat rodents--live rodents can and do kill/injure snakes).

Corn snakes are great. They come in a nearly endless variety of color morphs, and you could keep two or three very comfortably in a 55. All of the boas are out (too big too fast) except maybe rosy boas or sand boas. You could keep a ball or python in a 55, but once it reaches adult size (4-5 feet) it would be best to put it in something bigger. Children's pythons only reach about 3 feet, and are very easy to keep (though not widely available). Kingsnakes are suitable, but only one. They eat other snakes (and lizards, and mice, and fingers).

:clap ^ ^ ^

couple of corns would be cool...make sure you have a local supply for food(pinkies) and make damn sure your tank is sealed or you will wake up and it will be gone!! forget 1 time to double check lid and you'll find cornsnake wound up in a window blinds...if you find it at all...if i were to start herps again corn would be first..

actually 55 would make an awesome terrarium for dart frogs ... but there's a lot more work to that...

Hmm I like the corn snake idea. Although my mom didn't likethe snake idea when I said reptiles. Any good ways to convince her

Tell her you can't decide between a tarantula and a snake...

Chances are she'll encourage you to get the snake...
