I've been talking to John (Snookn21) over the last week about lungfish. I'm considering picking up a P. dolloi and a L. paradoxa from him. They would be between 12 and 18" in length.

The best for me would be if they could go into my 125g tank with current stock of bichirs, gar, and large cichlids (soon to be upgraded to a 220g tank that I already have).

If that wouldn't work, I have the option of picking up a 100g 48Lx24Wx21T tank of C-list. I would filter it with an Eheim 2217. How long would this tank last those two lungfish species together, or just the dolloi if the paradoxa could cohab with the 125g tank inhabitants?

Thanks guys (and yes, I've read the sticky on lungfish).

A couple of things:

  1. The lungfish that John sells are great lungfish! I have three myself (2x WAL and 1x SAL), and they were all purchased from John. One thing that you should note is that the P. dolloi are actually P. annectens. Solomon (E_Americanus) informed me that the lungfish that I got from John as a P. dolloi was actually a P. annectens, and the locality data confirms this ID.
  2. The SAL will fit in great with those fish provided that you keep it well fed. My SAL currently lives with a 4" oscar and 2x head & tail light tetras; it doesn't pay any attention to these fish.
  3. The WAL will not get along with any fish, so get that 100 gallon from Craigslist; your filtration plan sounds good to me. These fish may act all innocent and docile at first, but they will attack and injure/kill their tankmates sooner or later. Mine made its best attempt at killing a pleco, but luckily I saved the poor pleco. Many other members will agree that these fish are not community fish unless you majorly JDM them, and aggression may still be a problem even then.
  4. The SAL will be fine in the 125 gallon for quite some time as long as the filtration is good (more for the sake of the other fish). The 220 gallon will be big enough to house the SAL for life. The WAL will do great in the 100 gallon for a while but will eventually need to be upgraded to a 150 at minimum. The main thing with hosuing these fish is ensuring that they can fully stretch out and turn around easily, but the fish will certainly appreciate any extra space.

The SAL will be fine with the other fish, they're really mellow. If the Dolloi is as aggressive as the other African species, it's best left alone. Even if it doesn't bother your other fish, multiple lungfish are likely to fight (unless you're Earl with his multiple lung community, but I think he uses some form of sorcery).

Hmm, I was hoping it was actually a dolloi, as I've heard about how aggressive the annectans are. I may just get the SAL then, although it would give me a reason to get the second 100g tank of C-list...

Thanks guys.
