If breeding them was easy, there would be a lot more Lugubris pikes...haha. Most Saxatilis and Dwarf pikes are relatively easily bred though, so not all of them are wild.
Mud, all of my pikes are wild caught, when I got them in they weren't eatin anything but live foods. The longest it took me to get any of my pikes off of live foods was 5 days. Normally it only takes about two or three. They are greedy little buggas. Just don't give them food for a day or two and then try feeding them...they will try it. They might not eat it at first, but will sample it and test it. Eventually they will learn to eat it. Pikes are one of the easiest cichlids IMO to get off of live foods and onto prepared. My pikes eat practically everything, even my algae wafers for Herbert..haha...blasted little buggas.
Why ya waitin till this summer to get into pikes? I live only about 40 minutes from you...and I've got lots of pikes...

. Got a few actually that I may part with. Keep in mind though pikes aren't for everyone. They can get and be aggressive, have a crazy appetite, and can grow large. But if your willin to give them a try...more power too you.
Great starter pike would be Crenicichla sp. 'bellycrawler'. They are cheap, easy to find, and great pikes with a lotta 'tude. They don't get horribly large, but still get up there, and are great eating machines. My first pike was actually a male 'bellycrawler'. Great times lemme tell yaz. Several of the LFS in Lincoln AND Omaha have some for sale right now, as well as 'venezuela' and 'xingu II'. You want anything else though, come to me...haha...cuz the LFS SUCK at gettin anything else in. I order from Rapps regularly, so maybe you could get in on a group order.
