As stated, I'm contemplating a lungfish for my 180. I know from the sticky that the South American sp. is the Lungfish for me. I'm just curious about you're experiences with Lungs and tank mates. My 180's stock is in my sig, but for those of us playing the mobile version it is as follows: Golden Clown knife, H. Odoe, Alligator gar (temporary. It was an impulse purchase), and a common Mala. Wolf fish - all are around or over 12" long.

Now I know the wolf is a wild card, but the real terror is the knife. He's larger than everyone else in the tank and has no problems bullying when he's in the mood.

Given that list, would an appropriately sized lungfish work in my tank, or should I consider another fish?

Thank for any input,
John

Not sure if its the holiday or a lack of South American Lungfish keepers. Just trying to be thorough. Anyone have any tank mate experience with these guys?

I think the tank would be overstocked to be honest. The mala wolf will get around 20 inches it might take a while though. The Clown knife will reach 24 inches much quicker and fill up your tank. A SAL will be too much I think.

Figures I'd find one locally. Stopped by one of my LFS and they've got one for sale for $135. Looks to be around 10" to 12" and not particularly thick. They said I could get 15% off.

At this size I could also put him in my 120 with the p bass, scomb, sen bichir, datnoid, fire eel, and brown knife.

it will probably get bullied/out competed by the p bass or shovelnose

The p bass is the most eager to take food, but I always make sure food is spread across the tank to allow everyone to get their share. The Lima is not much for chasing food at all to be honest.

I was less worried about him getting his share of food, and more concerned about the potential conflicts between the bottom dwellers.

which why I put bullied before out competed. senegals aren't aggresive, but brown knife can be. I have no experience with fire eels. The catfish is the main concern. Most catfish will happily eat a tankmate regardless is it is bigger. I think your 120 overstock with just the shovelnose, p bass, and fire eel, let alone the bichir, knife, datniod, scomb and a lungfish.

I understand your opinion that my 120 is overstocked, and it certainly would be if all of these fish were full grown; however the everyone in the tank is still under 12". The dat and the fire eel are slow growers, and the p bass seems to have slowed down as well.

You are also correct about the brown knifes being potentially aggressive. Though he is the smallest fish in the tank, my little ABK is actually one of the most aggressive fish in the tank. I'm not sure that he would pick on a relatively docile fish like the Lung, especially if it was almost twice his size. He does engage the p bass almost daily though.

The catfish is really the least of my concerns, but since I've never kept a Lung before, I shall defer to your advice. Back to my search for red and yellow tailed barracudas then!

My abk in the 40 hates all fish and chases the little ctenopoma even though she is innocent. Nasty little bugger aren't they.
I always think long terms, but as far as short terms it could work
